Misfit Box Subscription Review and Recipe

Have you heard of the Misfits Box, an innovative new subscription box that reduces food waste? If not, I’m here to tell you all about it, and give you a fun recipe at the end!

The mission of this box is simple: reduce food waste by taking produce that has some kind of misfit to it. That may be too large, too small, a spot or an extra growth. This stuff wouldn’t be sold at a grocery store. Normally, that would mean the trash, but this company sends it to you! For $22 and $4.50 shipping (for the smaller box) either weekly or bi-weekly, you can have organic produce delivered to your door.

Part of the fun of this box is that everything is a mystery! I love the surprise of not knowing what I am getting, and then it pushes me to be creative with my cooking.

The boxes were packaged in eco-friendly cardboard with recyclable ice packs and stuffing. It was so strategically organized, and all the veggies were in great shape.

In my first box, I received…

  • 2 Tomatoes
  • 1 Head of Romaine Lettuce
  • 1 Leek
  • 1 Red Onion
  • 2 Green Bell Peppers
  • 1 Mango
  • 4 Apples
  • 3 Oranges
  • 1 Bag of String Beans
  • 3 Cucumbers
  • 1 Head of Cauliflower
  • 8 Limes

Everything came in gorgeous shape, and they didn’t even look like misfits! I couldn’t pick out anything wrong, and it was a great value. There were also stickers and recipes.

In my second box, I received…

  • 3 Green Tomatoes
  • 1 Head of Romaine Lettuce
  • 1 Bundle of Scallions
  • 2 Yellow Onions
  • 2 Yellow Bell Peppers
  • 1 Mango
  • 4 Apples
  • 3 Oranges
  • 1 Bag of String Beans
  • 2 Sweet Potatoes
  • 1 Squash

This box was not as exciting as my first. There were a lo of repeats, which is fine, but there were also some misfits that made it more of a hassle than a fun treat. The bell peppers had gashes out of them exposing the inner flesh, so I had to cut them all up and freeze them. The oranges had mold spores on the skins, so I had to peel them and bag them to eat immediately. The one onion had a lot of black stuff under the skin, so I had to peel several layers and chop and freeze it. This was a bit stressful after a super long day at work.

I am going to try another box, and see what my final decision is after that!

Now, it’s time for a recipe!

Potato Leek Soup

IMG_1919.jpg

  • One Leek
  • 3 Small Red Potatoes
  • Can of Garbanzo Beans
  • Chicken Bone Broth
  • Chives
  • Milk
  • Salt, Pepper, Olive Oil
  • Knorr Leek Soup Mix

First, cut up the leek and potatoes, spray with olive oil, and roast with salt and pepper in the over for 20 minutes on 400 degrees!

Meanwhile, boil the bone broth with a splash of milk and the soup packet.

Mix in the beans and roasted veggies, then garnish with chives…it’s that simple!

This was an easy and delicious recipe that would make enough to feed several people!

ALl thoughts and opinions are my own. I purchased these boxes myself.
