Eco Friendly Hack:Fixing Coiled Hair Ties

I’m trying to live a more sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle. Here’s some hacks and tips I’ve pick up along the way to reduce your footprint!

Have you hopped on the coiled hair tie trend? These hair ties by Kitsch (and many other brands now), are a plastic type hair tie in a coiled style that act as a slinky. They reduce breakage and kinks in the hair, and are honestly one of my favorites for my thick, wavy hair. When new, they’re tight but stretch out easily around the hair. When used, they stretch out bigger than you could ever imagine!

When they stretch out, I used to trash the hair ties because they wouldn’t work in my hair. No need to wrap it around 5 or 6 times. I went through several packs this way, making so much waste! Did you know there’s a way you can bring these back to life, using the hair ties until they actually break?

I didn’t until my little sister told me this tip, and I just had to share! Rather than trash those hair ties, put them in a glass of hot (or boiling) water. Instantly, the heat of the water shrinks the tie down to its original size, and once cooled, they can be used again! Check out this before and after to see for yourself!

It’s the little things that are really helpful as far as sustainability is concerned. This can mean just a few less pieces of plastic in a landfill per person, adding up to a larger difference. Did you know this trick existed? If not, are you going to try? Let me know how it works for you!
