As a biological anthropologist, I know a thing or two about bones. That means skeletons are my favorite decoration, and every day is Halloween!
I got this fun kit for Christmas, and I was so excited to make an 18 inch skeleton cast. Casting is actually a huge thing in anthropology, so my first practice run was a success! It came with the molds, the plaster, instructions, paint, magnets, glue, and a brush. I admittedly didn’t need to reference the instructions for anatomy purposes, but still used them for the rest!
To cast, I just mixed the plaster with water, kneaded it, and piped it into the mold. It was super easy, and within 2 hours, it was dry and easily popped out of the mold showing all the details!
After it dried, I was able to paint it! There were several colors, but I decided to go for brown so I could make it look like it came right from the ground! I used it to add some shadows and liveliness.
The final step was gluing on the magnets! I followed the instructions exactly, but did run short with the number of magnets. It’s a bit too heavy to put on my current fridge, but when I move, it’s going on display!
This was such a fun kit, and I love how it turned out. I also think it is super educational and would be great, and easy for kids to do and learn about the skeleton (you know I am all about that).
All thoughts and opinions are my own.
