How does Home Chef stack up?

We’re in an age of food subscription services, and I’ve tried a few different ones. It’s my mission to try at least one a month until I decide which one fits my lifestyle and tastes best, so today, we’re reviewing Home Chef!

I had a good deal for Home Chef, and picked 3 meals to serve 2 people. This cost me $32, though it would normally run for a bit more. The meals arrived when they said, and were well packaged in individual plastic bags with ice packs and insulator. Overall, their packaging wasn’t the most eco-friendly, but it was still recyclable.

The cards were a full size of printer paper, and had detailed instructions on how to cook everything. They also sent a binder to hold all the recipe cards. Keep reading to see the recipes I chose and how they were!

Soy Ginger Salmon with Garlicky Green Beans

This was the first recipe I made, and it definitely made cooking salmon (something I am a bit intimidated by) very easy. The fish itself was moist and tender, and the overall steps weren’t over my head. The green beans required very little work, and the sauce was a quick toss together.

As far as speed and ease, this recipe came out on top! The flavor wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t something I would feel a desire to make again any time soon. As far as portions, I actually had to make pasta on the side because it wasn’t enough food, so it would definitely benefit from a carb.

Butternut Squash & Walnut Risotto

Wow! I have never made risotto before, but it is definitely not an easy task. That being said, I found this to be a great way to make it, and the instructions made it bad-cook proof, so I ended up with perfect risotto!

While the risotto was roasting, I candied nuts and made the risotto, which is a lengthy process. The flavor of this risotto was out of this world though! With wine, shallots, and other seasonings, it was bursting in my mouth. Definitely my favorite recipe of the box and will make again!

Hazelnut and Prosciutto Flatbread

I didn’t know pizza could be so hard, but it turned out to be really yummy. While I was baking the garlicky flatbread, I made a spicy honey prosciutto and caramelized onions, then topped the pizza with those and cheese, walnuts, and arugula. What a delicious combination!

The individual steps weren’t hard, it just added up to be a lot of time. Fortunately, the ingredients in this recipe were the most prepared. The spicy honey sauce was awesome, and I definitely want to use that again.

Overall, I felt like the food was delicious, the packaging and overall subscription was great, but the portions just weren’t enough for me, and definitely not for 2 people. With more food, I think this would be a super worthwhile meal subscription!
