Mallorca Preparation

I’m going to Mallorca, Spain in a month! This is my first trip to Europe, and I am so excited to take in all the beauty of the Balearic Islands and the Mediterranean. With my trip a month a way, I wanted to share some of the unique things I do to prepare for a trip. I love to travel in a way that is experiential and educational (while looking good), and that takes a bit of prep. Here’s what I am doing now, and over the next month!

Research the Destination

I knew absolutely nothing about Mallorca, so I had to get researching the history and culture of the island! I am going to Cala d’Or, a gorgeous Southeastern beach resort. I like to look at Lonely Planet, travel blogs, and trip advisor pages to get a sense of the country’s flavor.

Some things I learned about the island:

  • There are tons of little cove beaches, lined by Spruce Trees. Where I am going, there’s 5 coves and a port (full of yachts, some belonging to royalty).
  • Mallorca also has gorgeous mountains, and stunning old rural towns. The terrain and landscape of the country is incredible.
  • The ocean side caves and cliffs are a wonder of their own, perfect for exploring.
  • The beachside towns are called resorts, different than what an American may think of a resort.
  • Get ready for fresh goodies…Mallorca is full of olives, vineyards and citrus groves!
  • While it is touristy in the summer months, theres a rural way of life in the mountains that is simple, wholesome, and beautiful. Be sure to see both sides of Mallorcan life.

Shop for the Trip

Since the photography opportunities will be excellent, I’m doing some shopping for the trip. Honestly, I have a lot of clothes and am still on my decluttering journey, so I am only allowing myself one new outfit max for the trip. I also just cleared out my bikinis, and have two brand new ones to bring!

Some things I do need, fashion wise, include a head scarf, a beach cover, and some new sunnies! I purchased a coverup and scarf from Shein (stay tuned for a review), and am scoping out some shades.

Other essentials actually included a neck pillow (I have a hard time sleeping on flights, but I will have to since it’s overnight), some beach flip flops, and an airplane sheet mask.

Packing

I haven’t officially started packing yet, but I have a few ideas of things I want to bring. I’ll be checking a bag and taking a backpack on board. I also plan to pack a small wicker circle bag for the actual trip. Also, a pair of wedges! I think I’ll skip the jewelry, because I’d rather have room to bring home some new pieces. I also can’t forget my travel journal!

As I pack, I may do another post on my packing tips and tricks!

Reading Material

I love beach reading, and plane reading, and just any time reading. I want to bring as many books as possible, but one is a new gift I received, The Girl’s Guide, and I want to pick up Don Quixote and Roads to Santiago (as suggested by Lonely Planet).

To Go

After some research, here’s my shortlist of some places to go, including beaches and restaurants! I only have 6 full days, so my traveling will be somewhat limited.

  • Restaurant Soy
  • Rucula
  • Kalypso Tutti Frutti
  • Cala Esmerelda
  • Playa Cala d’Or
  • Santanyi Outdoor Market
  • Es Pontas
  • Cala Gran
  • Es Trenc
  • Mondrago National Park

To Buy

I’ve also been picking out some things that are Mallorcan specialties that I would like to buy. Here’s my wish list!

  • Wine
  • Olive Oil
  • Sea Salt
  • Gin
  • Almonds
  • Textiles
  • Camper Shoes

I hope you enjoyed reading about my preparations! I can’t wait to share all about the trip to this gorgeous, island retreat.
