Preparing for Summer Vacation: Massachusetts Edition

Just like everything else, my travel this year is a little different. My family and I just booked our vacation, which is going to be much for local than traveling anywhere international. We wanted to drive and be in a remote area, so naturally, our range was limited. My work schedule has also been hectic, so the trip was a lot shorter than we may have wanted, especially accounting for quarantines!

So where did we choose? Rockport, Massachusetts! This remote beach town on Massachusett’s other cape is an idyllic dream, full of seafood shacks, little beaches, and that Northern charm people know and love. We leave in two weeks, so here is how I am preparing, especially during the times of covid!

Work Wrap Up

Unfortunately, I still have to work during this. No time off when you’re a grad student! But, I won’t be going on campus (obviously), and would like to have minimal to do. Right now, I am working extra hours during these weeks leading up to things so I can reduce the amount I have to work that week, and finish up any big projects. I am also arranging my on campus work for the 3 weeks I’ll be away, 1 traveling and 2 quarantine.

I still have summer classes, but those will be light. I could use this week to relax, as the burn out has been REAL. With hard work leading up, I know I’ll get it.

Research

Now, to the fun part! I have been extensively researching the area so we can do all the best things while away. From food to beaches to go, I want to be prepared. I am especially excited to visit some of the little seafood shacks, remote state parks, and donut and ice cream shops. Food and beach are my two favorite things. I have a running, organized list in my planner of all the must see spots.

Also, since we are driving there, I wanted to research surrounding towns. There’s more towns on Cape Ann than just Rockport, all with different vibes, sights, and beaches. By seeing them all, we will be exposed to so much more fun! Also, Salem, MA is close by, which is one of my favorite places in the Northeast. While Boston is also close, we will be skipping the city for this time, just to stay safe.

Packing

Since I am away at work, yet all my clothing is at home, packing will go a bit differently this year. I plan on picking all my outfits out this weekend, then last minute folding and putting them in a bag. I’m envisioning a different bikini for every day and preppy, beautiful sundresses.

Protection

With covid, my family and I are busy planning how to stay safe while still relax for a bit. This involves finding masks, booking an AirBnB to limit contact in our room, and quarantining before and after our stay! We plan to stay removed and remote, all while enjoying the sun and sand. Traveling during these times is hard, but it’s not impossible if you do it safely.

All thoughts and opinions are my own.
