There’s something so soothing about an art museum. You’re surrounded by talent, creativity, and years of expression. It’s essentially a visual history gallery for lovers of the aesthetic.
I’ve always loved visiting art museums, and always find a sense of calm while I’m there. I have so much appreciation for the creators, and the museologists that work hard to curate your experience. Maybe I’m a nerd, but if I could spend all day at a museum, I would! It’s probably the anthropologist in me.
The pandemic has hit museums hard. In addition to not being able to be open for several months, they also are no able to host less guests at a time, reducing revenue. Some interactive experiences have also been impacted. It’s not easy being a museum right now, but they’re doing a good job to bring an amazing experience to patrons regardless.
Supporting your local art museums is a great way to encourage their success. Through donations and visiting, you can continue to fund their initiatives, while also learning and immersing yourself in art around you. You may see local artists, as well as pieces from all over the world. Smaller art museums may not host hundreds of iconic paintings, but what they do have is just as rich. Influential, meaningful pieces.
I recently visited my local art museum, The Allentown Art Museum, and had the best time. They now have their lovely Rembrandt painting on show (which is a fantastic story you should read about here), and I was so excited to see her. The funny part is that I’ve seen this painting all of my childhood before I even know she was such a priceless work of art. This is exactly what I mean, every museum is full of treasures regardless of name.
While the covid protocols changed things a bit, they really did their best to create an enriching and “normal” experience. There was a new exhibit featuring gorgeous clothing from the women’s suffrage movement, and I loved it. I also really appreciated seeing the local art show inspiring hope and change. Some of my classic favorites were there as well, and no matter how many times I see them, I’m always discovering new things.
A bit before this, I also visited the Bellefonte Art Museum, a small free museum in the most charming Central PA small town. If you’re there (maybe visiting Lock Boutique), stop by the museum! It also was a spot on the Underground Railroad, a history we all should learn about. I felt that the exhibition they made to feature that was excellent, and the other art was supporting local Central PA artists (you could even purchase and support them).
So, if you’re looking to support your local arts communities while enriching your mind and body, check out your local art museum! Usually, admission is reasonable, and if you go on a free day, consider supporting the gift shop or leaving a donation. I promise you won’t be disappointed, and will leave feeling inspired and refreshed.
