All the big celebrations in my life include cake. That’s why I was SO excited when it was time to determine our wedding cake. Not only do I love to taste cake, but I love the idea of a really delicious, unique celebration cake. I wanted to share our process with cake tasting, because I had a few misconceptions that I quickly proved wrong.
- Not all bakeries will answer you (just because you want their cake doesn’t mean they will want to bake it).
- Cakes taste SO different between baker.
- Some cakes just taste plain bad.
- The professionalism really matters too.
- Keep your mind open.
The first thing I did was find bakeries in my area that had work I liked that I could contact. I reached out to each of them, and most of them didn’t respond (which was very upsetting and actually changed how I view these local bakeries). I kept a list of who I contacted and essential information.
We set up 3 different tastings, and 2 of which did not turn out. There were a variety of complaints I had with both, and while one was a very reputable bakery that just didn’t have the flavor I was going for, the other was a smaller baker that had me so excited, yet really didn’t deliver. Things weren’t mixed (there were literal bombs of flour in the cake), it was burnt, and I didn’t even receive the flavors I ordered. So, both of those were big no nos for me.
Our last tasting turned out to be a show stopper. The cake was so delicious, and we all cleaned our plates. We also loved working with our baker to come up with a sketch of our dream wedding cake. We felt comfortable and confident with every step of the cake process.
We ended up with a delicious, beautifully designed cake from an INCREDIBLE local baker. Not only will it have very minimal yet striking design elements, it also has a fun twist on the inside which makes for the perfect show stopper!
